Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc., today unveils its new line of 16 in-car single CD players, offering hard disc drives and playback of various digital music formats including MP3 and Windows Media Audio (WMA). As more consumers choose to download music from the Internet and store it digitally, Pioneer is expanding its product offerings including seven new units that support MP3 and WMA. Nine models include Pioneer’s signature Organic Electroluminescent (OEL) display and two offer a new dual faceplate design that motorizes open to reveal a secondary display made of OEL.”As the mobile entertainment arena continues to evolve, Pioneer is adding new features and technologies like MP3 and WMA playback,” said Michael Townsen, vice president of marketing for mobile entertainment at Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. “We’ve seen enormous growth in the number of consumers who download music to use in portable CD players, so we’ve expanded our product offerings to meet the new demand.”

Music File Management

The Pioneer players will play standard audio CDs, finalized CD-Rs and finalized CD-RWs as well as finalized CD-Rs/CD-RWs containing MP3 and/or Windows Media Audio files. All files are easily accessed using Pioneer’s intuitive cross keys. Songs are accessed using its track tag information. Information displayed, including up to 32 bytes of file names and folder names, are presented on Pioneer’s signature Organic Electroluminescent (OEL) display. Track, artist name and album title (ID3 v1.0 and v1.1 for MP3 files) of up to 30 bytes can be viewed by pressing the display key. Additionally, multi-session CDs containing different music files (i.e. wave files, MP3, etc.) can be used. By pressing the band button, the players will skip from playing one format to the other.

New Dual Display

Unique to the Pioneer DEH-P8400MP and Premier DEH-P840MP is a new motion mechanism dual display. The new motion mechanism adds a DIN-sized OEL display behind the original face of the unit. In its normal state, the rotary knob, preset buttons and LCD screen resides in a DIN face plate area. When the open button is pressed, the face plate motorizes in a slide down motion to reveal a OEL panel display with a 128 x 33 pixel resolution, doubling the display area. All music information is viewed on the bright, easy-to-read OEL display.

Functionality

Improvements in functionality and cosmetic appeal begin with the full flap down face, which provides more room for a larger display and improved button layout. The rotary volume knobs were given a more tactile feel. Seven models make use of large multi-color LED displays while the other nine models offer Organic Electroluminescent displays. The OEL display technology offers a fast refresh rate for vivid three-dimensional images; a wide viewing angle with high visibility under any brightness condition; a self-emitting device that eliminates the need for back lighting; very low voltage requirements (<5 volts); all encompassed in an ultra-thin panel.
